A prestigious restaurant of Swedish cuisine
Relais de Suède, in Paris
Le Relais de Suède is located on the Champs-Élysées. The brand-new Swedish Chamber of Commerce wanted a prestigious Swedish restaurant in its building. Naturally, they turned to the most famous decorator in Paris. Slavik drew inspiration from the Stockholm Opera House and the great Horta.
To those who would reproach him for using forms developed nearly eighty years earlier as models in the mid-1960s, Slavik retorts: “I love the ambiguous charm of this 1900 style. Our grandparents allowed themselves to indulge joyfully in an aesthetic depravity for which we no longer have the courage. I wanted to create a sense of nostalgia, comfort, and bourgeois happiness,” says Slavik. “I didn’t do it for the yé-yé crowd or the millionaires.”
Le Relais de Suède instantly became one of the most prominent restaurants for the media and political Tout Paris.
