The Relais de Su\u00e8de by Slavik<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Slavik is entrusted with designing the Relais de Su\u00e8de<\/a> by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce, which is due to open in Paris in early 1965, he cannot ignore what he discovered at Stockholm\u2019s Operak\u00e4llaren. And the curves, interlacings and arches deployed by Horta in Brussels. <\/p>\n

To those who might reproach him for taking as models, in the mid-1960s, forms developed nearly eighty years earlier, Slavik retorts: \u201cI like the ambiguous charm of that 1900. Our grandparents abandoned themselves, in their joy, to an aesthetic depravity that we no longer have the courage for.\u201d <\/p>\n

Vogue, June 1965<\/strong>: At the restaurant of the Maison de la Su\u00e8de, gilded roses and 1910-style curving woodwork. This Belle \u00c9poque panelling was designed by Slavik \u201cwith a strictly physical pleasure. It is more enjoyable to make them than to have made them.\u201d For their rounded outlines, the cabinetmakers call them \u201cbones\u201d. Stucco women form a circle of hips and busts beneath the dome. <\/p>\n

New York Herald Tribune, Paris, January 21, 1965: <\/strong>Its atmosphere comes from childhood memories of bourgeois interiors. \u201cI wanted to create a feeling of nostalgia, comfort and bourgeois happiness,\u201d says Slavik. \u201cI did not do it for the y\u00e9-y\u00e9 crowd or for millionaires.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aux \u00c9coutes, February 10, 1969 <\/strong>: One of the best foreign restaurants in Paris. The brilliant setting was created by Slavik\u2026 The Relais de Su\u00e8de is now considered one of the must-stop places in elegant Paris. <\/p>\n

Pierre Vedel<\/strong>, who was head chef at the Relais de Su\u00e8de from 1966 to 1969 before leaving for the Imperial in Tokyo, told me: \u201cThe Relais de Su\u00e8de was a very beautiful place, with a very long American-style bar, very chic, a crushed raspberry carpet, gilded wood panelling with banquettes and red leather upholstered armchairs, a large lounge, all beneath a large Tiffany-style glass roof. A buffet with various smoked salmon and other items, a large rotisserie\u2026 Of course, we served all of Paris\u2019s media and political elite.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Relais de Su\u00e8de<\/a> was destroyed in May 1975<\/strong> during an attack by the German \u201cBaader gang\u201d against the Swedish Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
